Studying psychology in high school sparked a curiosity in Cara that quickly grew into a lifelong passion.
' I have always been passionate about helping people and making a positive difference. I was fortunate to be able to study Psychology as part of my VCE — it sparked my interest and curiosity to learn more. This grew into me completing a Bachelor of Behavioural Science with La Trobe, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology.'
Now completing her Master of Professional Psychology, Cara’s goal is to become a registered psychologist and give back to her community.
Having completed all her tertiary studies with La Trobe, she describes the Albury-Wodonga campus as her ‘academic home.’
‘It’s wonderful that people who live in Albury-Wodonga can access the same high standard of education as students living in metropolitan areas.’
She says the structure of the course has allowed her to pursue her ambitions without needing to relocate.
‘The model of the Master of Professional Psychology, being primarily online, increased its accessibility and enabled me to complete the course locally without having to move away to a city.’
Throughout her journey, Cara has been supported by mentors who’ve made a lasting impression.
‘I have been very fortunate to consistently have access to, and receive guidance from, many knowledgeable, experienced and kind professionals who model to me what it means to be a skilled practitioner.’
This year, Cara was awarded the Rotary Club of Albury North Regional Psychology Bursary — a recognition she describes as both exciting and humbling.
‘I have no doubt there were many other exceptional and talented people who applied. I see the many diverse and generous contributions that the Rotary Club of Albury North makes across our community and am thankful for their support and investment in regional psychology students.’
As for what’s next,
‘I hope to ultimately become a Psychologist with General Registration, to practice within Albury-Wodonga and to support my community. If I can help to make a positive difference in people’s lives, then it’s all worth it.’
