The Magic of Color Dominance in Stranded Knitting! 🧶✨

Have you ever wondered why your colorwork looks a bit muddy, why the design gets lost in the background. Take this mitten for exemple. The top and bottom look so different, even though the same chart and yarns were used throughout?

It all comes down to color dominance—how you hold your yarns and which strand travels across the back in the dominant position. In colorwork knitting, the yarn held in the lower position (closer to your needles) naturally uses slightly more yarn per stitch and sits more prominently on the fabric surface, making that color pop much more vividly.

Pro-Tip for Hand Placement:
To easily control your dominance, hold your dominant color (usually your contrast/pattern color) in your left hand, and your background/main color in your right hand. The left-hand yarn will naturally strand below the right-hand yarn, giving you a consistent, gorgeous pop of color!
