This week's Arti-Fact is the lighthouse light! Every lighthouse light has a unique signature flash pattern (called a characteristic) and colour combination, acting like a cosmic fingerprint so fishermen knew exactly where they were. 💡

🎩 October 6 is World Mad Hatter Day!

Ever wondered where the saying “mad as a hatter” came from?

In the 18th and 19th centuries, hat makers used mercury to turn animal fur into felt. Years of working with mercury could cause serious health problems, including shaking, confusion, memory loss and changes in mood and behaviour. The condition was known as erethism.

So while the Mad Hatter is a fictional character, there was a very real reason people connected hat making with “madness.”

This bicorne hat from our collection dates to the 18th or early 19th century, when mercury was commonly used in felt-making. 🎩

Tomorrow is the last day of September and our last regular museum day for the season.

We’ll be open 11am–4pm tomorrow, September 30, if you’d like to stop by for one last visit.

The museum will be open by appointment through the fall and winter, and we still have programming coming up, as well as our weekly community coffee, so there will be plenty of chances to see us!

Thanks to everyone who visited and supported the museum this season. See you around the Fort!

This week's Arti-Fact is a cream separator! 🥛This high-speed Swedish-engineered device revolutionized dairy farming by saving butterfat from being lost, which helped save profit margins too! 🐄
