A raise or bonus doesn’t mean everything you earn suddenly gets taxed at a higher rate, only the portion above the threshold does. But that can add up, and most people don’t notice until they’re filing in April.
You have until March 1st, 2027 to plan for any extra income. Topping up your RRSP contribution, or making sure certain expenses get claimed in the right year instead of pushed into the next one can change the outcome. After that date, some of those options are gone.

Here's everything you need to know about the Canada Child Benefit. It's a tax-free monthly payment to help cover the cost of raising kids, and the amounts are bigger than most people realize. If you have children under 6, you could get up to $7,997 a year, per child.
If they’re between 6 and 17, it could be up to $6,748. Wondering how payments show up? When you register your baby's birth, most provinces let you use the Automated Benefits Application to apply for the CCB automatically, so there are no extra forms.
What most people don't know is that the amount gets recalculated every July based on your previous year's tax return. So both parents need to file every year to keep those payments coming, even with no income. One more move for future you!

First-time buyers can claim the $10,000 Home Buyers' Tax Credit to help with your down payment or other expenses. That's not a refund cheque, it's a tax credit, so it could lower what you owe by up to $1,400 in 2026.
Last thing! If you haven't opened an FHSA yet, it's the best of both worlds: contributions are tax-deductible now, plus withdrawals for your first home are completely tax-free later. Up to $8,000 a year, $40,000 lifetime. Future you is already thanking you!
