The fire at Sunbank remains active this morning, with expected flare-ups. Residents may notice smoke in the area.

There has been no significant change at the Sunbank site since yesterday morning’s battery cell burn flare up.

Fire watch operations continue around the clock, with crews remaining on site to monitor conditions.

📌 Summerside Sunbank Incident Report - Saturday, September 12, 2026:

Residents are reminded that if they witnessed smoke in the immediate area of the Summerside Sunbank site this morning, it is the result of ongoing battery cells burning off.

Flare-ups such as this may continue until the fire is officially deemed out. This is why our emergency response team continues to monitor the site around the clock, 24 hours a day.

Residents who notice smoke or a change in air quality in their area are asked to continue following guidance from the Chief Public Health Office, including:

Our emergency teams will continue closely monitoring conditions at the site and will provide updates if there are any significant changes.

📣 SCAM ALERT - IMPERSONATING POLICE AND CANADA POST

Today, Summerside Police Services received several complaints regarding person(s) calling residents while falsely claiming to be representatives of Canada Post's Fraud Department and law enforcement agencies, including Summerside Police Services and the RCMP.

In some of these instances, scammers use what appear to be legitimate service numbers and advise victims that they have been victims of criminal activity. The callers attempt to obtain personal information including names, addresses, and banking details.
Summerside Police Services wish to advise the public that neither Canada Post nor police agencies will contact individuals by phone to request banking information, instruct them to withdraw money from their accounts, purchase gift cards or cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin.

Residents should not provide personal or financial information over the phone to unsolicited callers. If you receive such a call, hang up and contact the organization directly using a verified phone number, or visit the agency in person.

If you believe you are a victim of fraud, report the incident to your financial institution and your local police service as soon as possible.

Summerside Sunbank Incident Report - Friday, September 11, 2026

Monitoring and safety operations will continue at the Summerside Sunbank site as the incident moves into a longer-term watch phase.

Four SFD crew members will remain on site at all times, working in four-hour shifts on a 24/7 basis to maintain fire watch and support site safety.

Air quality testing continued yesterday and into today. Data collected throughout the monitoring period will continue to be shared with the Chief Public Health Office as it becomes available.

Additional water sampling was completed yesterday. Water testing will continue into next week, with multiple enhanced level of testing above normal monitoring practices.

Fire watch operations are expected to continue in the weeks ahead as crews continue to monitor the site for any changes or potential flare-ups.

The City will continue working with its partners and will provide further public updates as new information becomes available.

Moving forward, we will be issuing daily incident report updates at 10:00 AM only, unless changes to the site occur. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding

🚸 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER 🚸

With Summerside students returning to the classroom today, Summerside Police Services would like to remind motorists to use extra caution on the roads, particularly within school zones where speed limits are reduced.

As a reminder, it is illegal to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing, and the penalty consists of:
🛑 Three-month driver's license suspension (12 demerit points)
🛑 Fine of up to $5,000

If you see a motorist failing to stop properly for a school bus, please pull over and park in a safe place, then report them by calling 911.

Other school-related driving fines include:
🛑 Speeding in a school zone - Minimum $100
🛑 Failing to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk - $200

Safety is everybody's responsibility, so let's keep everyone safe as the 2026-27 school year begins.

4:00 PM Update | Sunbank Solar Farm Fire - September 8/26

🟡 Situation remains status quo with no major changes at this time.
🟡 Crews are following the manufacturer’s instructions and recommended procedures for managing the incident.
🟡 Efforts are underway to keep the other battery banks as cool as possible.
🟡 Wind conditions are being closely monitored.
🟡 A police drone is providing aerial monitoring of the site.
🟡 The situation is being closely monitored on an ongoing basis.
🟡 The Fire Marshal office is on site.
🟡 PEI EMO is on site and actively involved in the response.
🟡 Water and air testing is actively underway and has been ongoing throughout the incident.
🟡 At this stage, response efforts are essentially a waiting game while conditions continue to be closely monitored.

All City of Summerside Departments including SPS and SFD continues to have representatives on site and or engaged during this active incident.

9:30 AM UPDATE – SUMMERSIDE SUNBANK FIRE

There has been no significant change in conditions at the Summerside Sunbank Fire this morning.

Emergency crews remain on scene and continue to monitor and manage the incident. The Shelter in Place notice remains in effect, and residents in the immediate area — including Bayview Drive, Seaweed Road and South Drive — as well as anyone experiencing a noticeable change in air quality, are asked to continue following the previously issued guidance.

A Reception Centre remains open at the St. Eleanors Community Centre, 1 West Drive, for residents who require a safe location to go.

Emergency officials continue to monitor fire activity, smoke and weather conditions.
