If I had to capture West Coast Contemporary in one image, this would be it.

When I moved to West Vancouver, I was blown away by everything, but especially the architecture. Seeing the work of Arthur Erickson, Ron Thom, BC Binning, Ned Pratt, it was all a storm of inspiration. Walking by the Montoverdi Estates, my head was spinning and my heart was full.

I’m very proud of the results (who would know a Venezuelan on the West Coast!), but also very grateful for the amazing clients and team that made it possible.

Halfmoon Bay Option C: Asymmetrical Hip Roof, no gutters.

Why this option makes sense?

If we’re going to cantilever a house to preserve the landscape, the cantilever volume needs to be reasonable. A vaulted roof as shown on my previous post makes the house really tall… and we’re in BC, we want to blend in, not stand out.

47! years young 😅

I don’t celebrate birthdays, no cakes, let alone parties. But today I’m celebrating life.

Also, 47 is a number of importance to me. My father passed at 47; when I was a kid I always thought about this number; I thought it was really far away and gave chills knowing one day I’ll get there.

Today I say: nah, this is just the beginning. There’s plenty of life left and worth living.

This project is already built and I have no idea what it looks like.

The clients didn’t want pictures taken for privacy reasons.

For my fellow designers and architects, would you design a house if you can’t take pictures of the final project?

I’m curious to know. Personally, I wouldn’t. Maybe if I charge double, but if it’s a special project I doubt it. My fees are just gas to keep me going. The ultimate reward is to see the final product, executed as intended… to get a text from the clients years later, saying how happy they are.

Proposal A for our Halfmoon Bay Project

The general idea came to mind the minute I stepped on site. Rather than blasting or build standard foundation walls on top of the boulder, we wanted to respect it and disrupt it as little as possible… a cool idea came to mind later, and is to clad the underside of the floor with a reflective material, like a mirror to create an illusion of green infinity

I’m not an engineer but almost sure this will work. Wait to see Proposal C, wicked. I’m very excited to work with Lincoln Construction | Home Builder on this project, I always said it, design means nothing without good ex*****on.
