Palau’s President Surangel Whipps Jr says he is standing by an agreement with the United States to resettle 75 deportees in Palau.

He says the third country nationals are not criminals, but skilled workers who can help strengthen Palau’s workforce.

In return, Palau will receive US$7 million (approx AUD $10.6 million) for support services, infrastructure, and a new hospital.

The president has denied acting alone, telling Pacific Beat that a group of chiefs, women leaders, and house leaders supported the agreement before it was signed.
