In a recent study, The Anh Phan, Huu Khang Nguyen, and My Khanh Huynh found some interesting answers when they asked the question: “What performs better – video or static images – when it comes to social media?”

They write: “As social media platforms increasingly privilege dynamic, video-based content over static posts, there is a pressing need to examine whether, and in what ways, media format moderates the psychological mechanisms by which content attributes and influencer effects translate into empathy and donation intention.”

In their paper, the team examined “how content-related variables – content attributes, perceived ease of use, imagery quality, vividness, transportation, prior experience, and social media influencer effect – influence empathy and donation intention in digital charity campaigns, with a focus on the moderating role of media format (static post versus short-form video). Guided by the Stimulus – Organism – Response (SOR) framework, a randomized online experiment with 592 participants compared emotional and behavioral responses to the same charitable message presented in two formats.”

Late last year we published the paper “High adult mortality of African Penguins Spheniscus demersus in South Africa after 2004 was likely caused by starvation” by Richard B. Sherley, Robert J.M. Crawford, Lynne J. Shannon, Alistair M. McInness, Tegan Carpenter-Kling, and Azwianewi B. Makhado.

This study, published in the Journal of African Ornithology about the tragic loss of life and suffering of a species, has been featured on over 137 news outlets globally, including CNN and National Geographic.

In “Leveraging climate resilience through AI chatbot farming adoption among rural Zimbabwean women” by Forbes Makudza, Phillip Dangaiso, Simbarashe Muparangi, Edmore Matisi, Nyasha Makiwa, and Godfrey Makandwa, the authors explore AI integration and acceptance in communal agricultural practices as a lever for improving climate change resilience among rural women in Zimbabwe.

Earlier this year, senior leaders from Ukraine’s academic publishing sector gathered at Oxford Brookes University for a high-level development program. Titled “University Press Publishing for Ukraine: Policy and Practice,” the program addressed initiatives to strengthen Ukraine’s academic publishing infrastructure and support its alignment with international publishing standards and best practices. The program was jointly organized by the Oxford Brookes’ Centre for International Publishing and Supporting Ukrainian Publishing Resilience and Recovery (SUPRR), in cooperation with Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

World Oceans Day, held annually on June 8th, is an international day to raise awareness of the importance of the world’s oceans. Today we’re featuring the book “The Only Flag Worth Flying: Direct Action and the Enforcement of International Marine Conservation Law.” Written by researcher and PhD Law candidate Sarah Levy and with a foreword by Paul Watson, Founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Captain Paul Watson Foundation, this book explores the legal and historical foundations of marine conservation law, traces the emergence of direct-action enforcement, and looks ahead to the emerging landscape of ocean governance beyond the state.
