A 70% margin might look like a brilliant result.
But before you use it to price the next job, ask one question: have all the costs actually been included?
Supplier invoices still to arrive, plant hire waiting for approval, and credit notes sitting in a queue can all make a job look more profitable than it really is.
For contractors managing multiple sites, timely reporting from site managers gives you a much clearer view of what each job is actually costing.
Because an impressive profit figure means very little if you cannot trust the information behind it.

Imagine you sell something for £100 and it costs £70 to deliver.
That leaves £30 of gross profit.
Give the customer a 10% discount and they pay £90.
Your costs are still £70, so your gross profit falls to £20.
The selling price has reduced by 10%, but your profit has fallen by a third.
Discounts can make sense, but they should always be a decision rather than a habit.
Before reducing your price, ask whether it will help you win profitable work or simply make the business busier.

Bookkeeping is often treated as something that needs to be done for tax.
But when it’s kept up to date, it can tell you much more.
It can show you what customers owe, which bills are coming up, how costs are changing and how the business is performing.
If the books are only updated when a deadline approaches, that information arrives too late to help you make decisions.
At Unity, we use digital bookkeeping and connected systems to keep financial information current and useful.
Because bookkeeping isn’t just about recording the past.
It’s the foundation for better decisions.
Paying £50 a month for a gym membership?
That’s £600 a year from your own pocket.
But could your company pay for it instead?
A company-paid gym membership is normally treated as a benefit in kind. That means it isn’t tax-free, but the personal tax cost could still be lower than taking enough money from the business to pay for it yourself.
For a higher-rate taxpayer, a £600 gym membership could result in £240 of personal tax.
The company will also have tax, National Insurance and reporting responsibilities, so it needs to be set up correctly.
Sometimes the tax on a perk can be cheaper than the cash needed to buy it personally.
Another reason why good tax planning is about understanding your options.

When you're self-employed, you get pretty used to wearing a lot of hats.
😄 You're doing the actual work.
😁 Finding that next customer.
🤔 Sending the invoices and following them up, if you can remember!
😟 Keeping hold of receipts.
😩 Trying to stay on top of the books.
And somewhere amongst all of that, you're supposed to understand what HMRC needs from you too. But working for yourself doesn't mean you have to figure everything out by yourself.
At Unity, we can take care of the accounting side, help you get the right digital systems in place and be there when you've got a question and simply need someone to ask.
So instead of spending your time worrying about accounts and tax, you can spend more of it doing the thing you actually went into business to do.
You can work for yourself without having to do everything yourself.

As a business grows, looking after the finances becomes a much bigger job.
It’s no longer just about keeping the books up to date and filing returns.
You need current information, reliable payroll, cashflow forecasts and someone keeping an eye on the wider financial picture.
But building that support in-house can mean employing several different people.
An outsourced finance department brings everything together.
At Unity, we can support the day-to-day finances, provide regular management information and help you plan ahead, all through one team and one point of contact.
You get the financial support the business needs without having to build an entire department yourself.
Has your business outgrown basic accounting support?

Planning to employ someone?
Invest in new equipment?
Open another location?
Change your pricing?
If your accountant only finds out after the decision has been made, they can record what happened.
But they can’t help you plan for it.
At Unity, we believe the most useful financial conversations happen before the decision.
With current figures, sensible forecasts and a clear understanding of your plans, accounting becomes something you can use to move the business forward.
Not just something that records where it has already been.

Most businesses have one or two customers they would really notice if payment arrived late.
Not because anything is necessarily wrong, but because wages, suppliers, VAT and other costs still need to be paid.
A cash flow forecast allows you to test situations like this before they happen.
What if your largest invoice was paid 30 days late?
Would the business still have enough cash to cover everything comfortably?
The aim isn’t to predict the future perfectly.
It’s to understand where the pressure points are while you still have time to make a plan.

Turnover can look impressive.
But if a customer takes more time to manage, regularly asks for work outside the original scope or consistently pays late, the revenue they bring might not be as valuable as it appears.
Good financial information should show you where profit is actually coming from, not simply how much you’ve invoiced.
Because growing the wrong type of work can make a business busier without making it better.
