World Su***de Prevention Day – 10th September 2026

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge stigma and encourage open and compassionate conversations about su***de.

This year’s theme for World Su***de Prevention Day is ‘Changing the narrative on su***de’. It aims to inspire everyone to engage in open and honest discussions about su***de and suicidal behaviour and create better cultures of understanding and support.

Talking about su***de can feel difficult, but starting a conversation can make a real difference. You don't need to have all the answers. Asking someone how they are, listening without judgement and helping them find support can be incredibly important.

If you're worried about someone:
• Check in and ask how they're really feeling
• Give them time and space to talk
• Listen without judgement
• Take what they tell you seriously
• Encourage them to seek support

And if you are struggling yourself, please reach out. You do not need to wait until things reach crisis point before asking for help. Contact us or one of the support organisations below:

If you or someone else need urgent help for your mental health, call 111 and select the mental health option for expert advice and support.

Samaritans are also available day or night, 365 days a year. Call free on 116 123. https://www.samaritans.org

If you're under 19, you can also call 0800 1111 to talk to Childline https://www.childline.org.uk/ – the number will not appear on your phone bill

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or attend your nearest Emergency Department.

https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/mental-health-services/where-to-get-urgent-help-for-mental-health/

This World Su***de Prevention Day, let's help change the narrative by talking openly, listening compassionately and reminding people that asking for help is OK.

Start the conversation. Listen. Connect. Support.

We are all invited to light a candle at 8pm to show support for su***de prevention, to remember a loved one, and for the survivors of su***de. There are also many other ways you can get involved, which you can find on their website: https://www.iasp.info/wspd/
