🔥 Why Does My Log Burner Work Fine One Day But Smoke The Next?

If your log burner works perfectly one evening but sends smoke back into the room the next time you light it, it can be frustrating and confusing.

If the chimney were completely blocked, you would expect it to happen every time. When the problem comes and goes, something else is affecting the way the chimney draws.

Common causes include:
• A cold chimney creating a temporary air blockage
• Extractor fans changing the air pressure in your home
• Modern renovations making older houses more airtight
• Wind direction and downdraught around the chimney terminal
• A partially restricted chimney (soot, tar, nesting material, debris)
• The stove itself: a baffle refitted incorrectly, blocked airways, excess ash or a worn door rope
• Opening the stove door too quickly
• Wet or unsuitable fuel creating extra smoke

If a stove repeatedly spills smoke or fumes into the room, it should not be treated as normal. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm and arrange for the appliance and chimney to be checked before continuing regular use.
