Have you seen the weather forecast yet? 😂
Driving in western Iceland on August 12? Check your route before the day of the solar eclipse.
Temporary road closures and one-way systems are planned across parts of the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, Dalabyggð, Reykjanes and the Capital Region. Some of the restrictions will begin as early as 8:00 in the morning.
Depending on your route, you may not be able to leave the same way you arrived, so allow much more time than usual.
You can find the official maps, timings and any further updates here:
https://www.vegagerdin.is/en/total-solar-eclipse-2026
Check the page again before setting off as well as road.is as the plans may still be updated.

All you need to see them👇
1. Clear skies
2. Getting away from light pollution
3. Enough solar activity
Check the cloud-cover map and aurora forecast on vedur.is. Then find somewhere dark where you can park safely and be patient. You don’t need a famous viewpoint or a specific Northern Lights location.
