Another key milestone achieved for the IC2

Almost 6km of high-voltage land cables have now been installed between the Magħtab Terminal Station and the landfall transition joint bay, with all nine land cables successfully terminated at the terminal station.

Next milestone: Another key milestone is expected next week with the completion of the final cable joint on Maltese territory, marking the conclusion of all land cable jointing works in Malta and preparing the circuit for its connection to the submarine cable once the latter is laid.

Another important milestone for the Malta–Sicily Interconnector 2 (IC2), with the successful arrival, transportation and installation of the project’s auto transformer and shunt reactors in Malta and Sicily.

These complex operations required extensive planning and close coordination between contractors, engineers, authorities and project stakeholders.

Once commissioned, IC2 will strengthen Malta’s security of electricity supply, improve network resilience and support the country’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system.

Works on Malta’s second electricity interconnector continue to progress at the Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq landing site.

The pilot hole for the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) process has now been completed, and the first of two reaming passes has commenced to gradually enlarge the bore to the required diameter.

In this video, ICM’s Perit explains the HDD process, the different stages involved and how this technique allows the cable ducts to be installed beneath the seabed while minimising disruption to the surrounding area.

Horizontal directional drilling works have started in Malta for Malta’s second electricity interconnector, creating the underground link between the onshore and offshore sections while minimising the impact on the coastline.

Once completed, the project will double Malta’s electricity interconnection capacity, strengthen energy security and support the integration of more renewable energy.
