The EUAA has published a new situational update on victims of trafficking in human beings in asylum and reception, examining recent policy and legislative developments across EU+ countries.

The update highlights that:
🔷 Human trafficking continues to evolve, with changing migration patterns, increased use of new technologies, including AI, and the digital recruitment of victims, creating additional challenges for authorities.
🔷 Children remain particularly vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation, stressing the need for timely identification and referral for their protection and to access support.

The EUAA supports EU+ countries in identifying and referring presumed victims of human trafficking to specialised care and support services. The Agency aims to build capacity and strengthen practical cooperation and information-sharing among EU+ countries and relevant experts.

The update presents key trends and the latest developments and practices to help strengthen responses to trafficking in human beings within asylum and reception systems.

As part of our support to Italy, EUAA’s Pozzallo Modica Reception Centre makes use of the EUAA Referral Tool to help ensure that applicants with special needs are referred to the appropriate support services.

If special needs are identified during the asylum or reception process, EUAA team explains the purpose of the referral, gathers the necessary information with the applicant's informed consent, and, where appropriate, facilitates referrals to relevant service providers. The tool also supports the preliminary assessment of the urgency of each case, helping to ensure that applicants receive timely assistance.

The EUAA Referral Tool is part of the Agency's Vulnerability Toolkit, alongside the Identification of Persons with Special Needs (IPSN) and the Special Needs and Vulnerability Assessment (SNVA) tools. Together, these tools support the early identification, assessment and referral of applicants with special needs, while facilitating a coordinated approach between the authorities and service providers.

📊 EUAA's latest show that asylum applications in the EU+ continued to decline in May 2026, reaching their lowest monthly level in almost four years. Afghans filed the most applications (5,600), followed by Venezuelans (4,600), with 92% of the latter submitted in Spain.

As part of their support to Italy, EUAA personnel in Lampedusa inform newly arrived applicants about their rights, obligations and the asylum procedure.

Yesterday, EUAA teams delivered information sessions to ensure that all applicants understood the steps ahead. Working alongside cultural mediators, EUAA personnel ensured that information was provided in a language each applicant could understand, facilitating clear communication throughout the screening process.

Applicants were guided through the asylum procedure, informed about the documentation required for their application, and advised on the next steps. Following health checks carried out by the Italian Red Cross, EUAA personnel supported the screening process and conducted preliminary vulnerability checks to identify applicants with specific needs and refer them to the appropriate support mechanisms.

The EUAA has published four new Medical Country of Origin Information (MedCOI) topical reports on Georgia, examining access to paediatric care, hepatitis treatment, diabetes mellitus care, and gastroenterological services across the country.

The reports highlight that:
🔷 Access to specialised care remains uneven, with services largely concentrated in hospitals in major urban centres and limited availability in rural areas.
🔷 Most specialised healthcare is provided by private institutions, with significant regional disparities in the availability of medical services.
🔷 Shortages of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses and medical specialists, continue to affect access to care, while expertise is heavily concentrated in Tbilisi.
🔷 Although public health coverage has expanded, patients with chronic or complex conditions often face significant out-of-pocket costs for long-term treatment and advanced therapies.

The reports provide EU+ asylum authorities with up-to-date information on healthcare provision in Georgia, supporting the assessment of asylum applications lodged by Georgian nationals.

Working alongside interpreters, the teams ensured that applicants received information in a language they could understand, helping to facilitate clear communication throughout the information sessions.

Where additional documentation is considered necessary, EUAA Personnel explained the process for obtaining it, ensuring applicants understand the requirements of the procedure.
