Flash-trax.com
NZ single and video reviews and reminiscences from the music industry in general. New features coming from late 2024.
Flash-trax.com owner and managing director Jack has been a pro musician for over 20 years. In this time he's recorded and released work, managed acts to international success, organised nationwide and international tours, and successfully ran an independent label for 8 years. Jack has been a reviewer and interviewer for some time and with his friends MusicNZ making the difficult decision to withdraw from reviewing promotional single and video releases from 1st July 2023, Jack decided to take up the mantle and do it instead. Additional to this, Jack is running a blog called From The Vault, which features a song that's made a mark on Jack's life at some point. It could be a world famous global smash, or a smaller, one-time hit. He'll briefly chat about it, you may see a brief chat with someone from the band itself, and then the video will play.

Tablefox – Seven Years
Auckland alt-rockers Tablefox are back with a belter of an anthem in Seven Years. The guys have taken me on a journey through the years here, giving me flashes of a number of my favourite mind's eye flashpoints of inspiration. Let me delve... I was immediately hit with the depth of beef in the guitar. Production can on occasion thin this out somewhat and lighten the overall effect....

Tiger Lotiss – Tiger In The Garden
Well now. I've reviewed this chap before. Tiger Lotiss, aka Daniel Ly, has already caught my ear with his previous single Chameleon (under the artist monicker TiGER), which you can find elsewhere on this site. This new track, Tiger In The Garden, is another head turner - as proven by his continued success in a USA-hosted music competition into which this single has blasted its way....

Courtnay & The Unholy Reverie – Devil In The Details
I have been a fan of Courtnay & The Unholy Reverie from the first time I heard them. Bluesy, ballsy, full and professional. Hailing from that bastion of quality Kiwi music, the mighty Taranaki, this band keeps on delivering and developing. Lead vocalist Courtnay Low (rhythm guitars too) is joined on lead vocals for this mammoth rock track by the bands bassist…...

The Jason McIver Collective – Aurelia Blue
As Take That once sang, "Babe.... I'm back again!" Maybe this is relevant to me, maybe my buddy Jason McIver, he who, from his Motueka home, is having a great time bringing out some exceptional guitar-based music, heartfelt and thoughtful. Rich like melted chocolate, and leaving you wanting more. Bewitching and atmospheric, new single Aurelia Blue is out already. Thanks to things I will not speak of here, I am reviewing in retrospect....

Over the last number of weeks I've had a lot of exposure to the beast that is Artificial Intelligence, referred to as AI. I have had a number of projects stifled and postponed due to accusations from external agencies that I myself have used AI to create what I do.
This is not correct. My writing is entirely from my head. My music production and composition is entirely "human". I'm going to be providing at least one link to AI tracking software at the foot of every review I post, as I am now back once again.
For music I produce, all EPKs will include more than one AI tracking tool and an invitation to use them.
There have been a lot of things our glitching world has thrown at me in the last year or two. Thanks for sticking with me. I have a formidable backlog so I'll be getting into it ASAP.
And to anyone reading this that is less than honest in their intentions, you know who you are and I don't quit when I've done nothing wrong.

REALITY VERSUS AI
Time I made a statement on this. As a musician since the mid 1980s, and as a lover of the art form, I cannot and do not endorse the use of AI to create music that one intends to pass off as organic, human-created music. Typing a handful of prompts into a prompter and letting machine algorithms "create" a song is not art....

Trouble With Normal – I’m Not Sure
Ōtautahi based three-piece Trouble With Normal brings us rollicking new single I'm Not Sure. Recently I've been seeing another resurgence in 21st century New New Wave bands, bringing us today's interpretation of those chaotic days when Messrs Lydon, Jones, Matlock, Cook and Beverley (can you guess which one's real surname was Beverley?) had burned bright and faded away into folklore....

Narakel – Where Did Everybody Go?
R & B is a very competitive genre. Christchurch-born, Sydney based Kiwi singer Narakel appears to be aware of this, as he has started on a journey that refuses to be pigeon-holed directly into the genre at a basic level. New single Where Did Everybody Go? is a quality example of how this young artist is putting his desire to be unique into form....
