Director Ibrahim Omar’s statement, read on his behalf prior to the presentation of the Grand Prix.
Ladies and gentlemen, Team of the Curtas Vila do Conde Festival, esteemed jury members, and dear audience.
I wished so much to be there with you today, but circumstances made it impossible. On another level, these circumstances seem to apply to our world today—choked by bad decisions, poor vision, and mismanagement. It is a world that still hasn't learned that living in peace is a basic right, the bare minimum that anyone should expect.
In the region where I come from in Sudan, a young boy used to leave his house early at dawn to walk kilometers to school. He carried a bag made of plastic bags, so fragile it could rip in half with a harsh gust of wind. This child was trying to change his family's fate through education. One day, on his way to school at five in the morning, accompanied only by cattle and sheep herders who rise early just like the students, a tragedy took place as he stepped on a landmine.
The mine exploded. The boy was thrown into the air, just like the flimsy plastic bag he was carrying. He became just like it—in that moment, you couldn't tell the difference between the plastic bag and his tiny body scattered in the air.
That mine was planted more than thirty years ago during a war in that village. The person who planted it didn't know when it would take a life, or whose life it would be. Decades later, a child’s foot stepped on it, shattering the dream of a boy who only wanted to change his family’s life through learning.
The wars destroying our country today are made by that same evil mind that manufactured the mine, and bought by the same ignorant person who planted it—all to steal the life of an innocent child whose only dream was to learn.
My film, Nothing Happens After You Leave, is a reflection on human fates, and on what politics inflicts upon ordinary people.
Today, we live in a world filled with hatred and bitter divide. I have nothing left but cinema—a place where I can speak, and a voice I want to keep alive forever.
Freedom to all people fighting for their rights. And shame on every politician who feeds on the blood of their own people just to hold onto a few rusted chairs of power.
Thank you for showing my film in your program this year.
Ibrahim Omar

Jury Statement
The jury, composed by Cleo Diára, Guillermo Galoe, Carlos Losilla, Marie-Pauline Mollaret, Christine Vachon, shared their statement:
What brings us together here, in this amazing festival CURTAS, is our love for cinema and this idea that cinema can make a difference and unite people. With a great simplicity and a small economy, the film we decided to award highlights that idea, and manages to tell a strong but humorous tale about a terrible situation. It imagines screening and watching films as an act of resistance. It gives us some hope for the future, but also reminds us that oppression will always attack art and artists.
We’re very proud to give the Grand Prix DNC Beers to Nothing happens After your absence by Ibrahim OMAR.

The film is written, produced, and directed by Ibrahim Omar, marking his second feature project. Joining the film as co-producers are Samir Issa and Osama Ayad. We are thrilled with this experience, through which we strive to sustain the production model we developed in our previous projects—which participated in Visions du Réel—and our short film that recently screened at the Cannes Film Festival within the Directors' Fortnight section.
The film is a co-production between Sudan, Egypt, and Canada."

Films begin with an idea. This idea grows in the presence of a team that believes in it and brings it to life. Inside a frame of images, the only way to capture an idea—allowing the director to breathe spirit and vision into it exactly as imagined—is realized through the various stages of production. These stages manifest through the crew, whose relentless collective search helps body forth that original concept.
"Cinema closely resembles a search for precious stones. These gems do not reveal themselves until you find a path to dig. This digging, which begins deep in the soil, is very much like making a film within a frame of images. The shots become the precious stones, discovered by searching into the very depths of the idea, only to emerge into existence as a film. Continuous shots are part of this process of searching within the idea destined to be realized, ultimately bringing the cinematic work to light."
The purpose of an idea is not merely to be presented as a picture through a sequence of assembled images to form a certain object. When an idea is introduced in cinema, it attempts to create a meaning. Often, this meaning is achieved; at other times, it remains confined within a frame of images accumulated one after the other. Thus, an idea is read through this cinematic sequence and juxtaposition, not merely through a standalone image.
Through this statement, I would like to thank every single member of the crew. This is the team that brought to life a film we were all searching for within the depths of the idea: Nothing Happens After Your Absence. This project stands as the third installment of a cinematic trilogy exploring the themes of Post-Modernism and Post-Trauma, as part of an ongoing cinematic journey.
Thank you to the crew of this film, who helped find the meaning within a frame of images, turning the work into a "cinematic film" that carries a meaning—one to be interpreted by the audience who will watch it.
My continuous gratitude to the film crew.
