I’m not going to lie… I’ve been feeling really burnt out since school started back. Some days it feels like there’s always another lesson to plan, another pile of work to mark and another thing that needs my attention. 🫠

So seeing the little tree the students made with Post-its about what they love about their teachers was such a sweet surprise. 🥹

Of course, the first note I saw about me said I was strict and gave too much work. 😂
And honestly… that one stung a little.

Because behind every lesson, every assignment and every expectation is a teacher who is genuinely trying to give their students their best.

But then I kept reading.

There were more notes. More kind words. And then each teacher was given a flower. 🌸

And for a little moment, I stopped thinking about the deadlines, the marking, the exhaustion and everything else that comes with teaching.

I just felt appreciated.

Sometimes teachers need to be reminded that we’re seen too.

And today, I really needed that reminder. ❤️

Happy World Teachers’ Day to all the teachers doing their best, even on the days when they’re running on empty. 🍎✨

🎨✨ Just a small artist from Trinidad with a big imagination and probably WAY too many creative ideas 😂💕

I’m Sian, the artist and educator behind Snickets Studios! I love drawing, painting, experimenting with different mediums and basically finding any excuse to make something creative. 🫶🏽

To all our new followers… HIIII!! 🥹💕 Welcome to the Snickets family! I’m so happy you’re here and honestly still a little shocked that so many of you have decided to stick around 😂

Here’s to making more art, trying new things, sharing the process and hopefully inspiring a few of you to pick up a pencil or paintbrush along the way. 🎨✨

Thanks for being here and supporting my little corner of the art world. It really does mean more than you know. 🥹💗

I did a drawing yesterday. Is it perfect? No. But I did it. ❤️

I’ve been so caught up with work and life lately that I haven’t been making much art of my own. So this was my little reminder that I don’t need to wait for the perfect moment, the perfect idea or the perfect result. I just need to pick up my pen and create.

The 4th week of school and I’m already tired. 😮‍💨

Somehow, between teaching, planning lessons, running a studio and keeping up with everything else, I’ve put my own art on the back burner.

And honestly, I needed this reminder too. ❤️

Art has always been more than just something I teach. It’s something that makes me feel like *me*. So maybe it’s time to stop putting it off and make something just for the sake of creating.

No deadlines. No grades. No expectations. Just me, making art again. 🎨

So… what should I create next? 👀

One of my favourite things about teaching art is watching students go from learning the fundamentals to finding their own creative voice. 🎨🤍

Art classes aren't simply about being given a blank page and being told to draw. There's so much that happens before that.

This month, my Adult Art students explored value scales and learned how to create different shades using techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, scumbling and stippling. We then applied those techniques to shading 3D forms, explored ways of creating different textures, and learned how the marks we make can completely change the way something looks and feels.

And then came the fun part.

After learning and practising those techniques, students were given the freedom to create whatever they wanted. They could choose their subject, experiment with the techniques they'd learned, combine ideas and begin figuring out what feels like them.

That's what I believe art education should be about.

Learning the tools, understanding the techniques, experimenting with different mediums and then using all of that knowledge to express your own ideas.

Because the goal isn't for every student to create the same artwork.

The goal is to give them the knowledge and confidence to eventually say:

“This is what I want to create.” 🥹🎨

And honestly, seeing that transition from “I'm learning how to do this” to “Now I know what I want to do with it” is one of the most rewarding parts of being an art teacher. 🤍

Paint. Draw. Imagine. Create.

From that little girl with her whole life ahead of her… to the woman she became. 🥹
Life didn’t go exactly as planned, but somehow, I’m still here, still dreaming, still creating, still me. ❤️
