𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡|Hisanori KOJIMA|.kojima
Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Hisanori Kojima received his B.F.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. in Sculpture Conservation from Tokyo University of the Arts. Alongside his artistic practice, he specializes in the conservation and research of Buddhist sculpture, where close observation of historical traces has profoundly shaped his understanding of time, memory, and human existence.

Through the restoration of ancient sculptures, Kojima encounters inscriptions, chisel marks, fragments of wood, and subtle signs left by unknown artisans. These overlooked details inspire him to reflect on the countless lives and events that have disappeared from history. His works often transform these quiet reflections into delicate wooden sculptures and butterfly motifs, expressing the beauty of impermanence and the invisible presence of time.

Working primarily in wood, Kojima invites viewers to contemplate the relationship between history, memory, and the present. His sculptures evoke moments that can never be fully known, offering poetic meditations on unseen lives and the enduring passage of time.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡|Kei KAIYA

Born in Chiba, Japan, Kei Kaiya received his B.F.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. in Sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts. Inspired by natural phenomena such as ice, fire, and clouds, his sculptures transform fleeting states into forms that exist between animals and nature, balancing movement with a quiet sense of permanence.

Rather than depicting specific creatures or moments, Kaiya seeks to preserve the invisible energy of nature through precise sculptural forms. In works inspired by the idea that the ordinary ground beneath our feet may once have carried ancient life, he reflects on the accumulation of time, the continuity of life, and the subtle relationship between memory and the natural world.

Positioned between figuration and abstraction, Kaiya's sculptures continually shift through their interaction with light, space, and the viewer. His works invite contemplation on the vitality embedded within form, offering poetic reflections on transformation, coexistence, and the enduring cycles of nature.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡|Ai HAIBARA

Born in Okayama, Japan, Ai Haibara graduated from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo University of the Arts. Haibara began creating at the age of fifteen, driven by a desire to build a gentle world of her own. Through years of exploring drawing and various forms of expression, she ultimately found wood carving as the medium best suited to shaping that imagined world. For the artist, each sculpture represents another inhabitant within this personal universe, carrying the warmth and affection she has invested in its creation.

Viewing every work as if it were her own child, Haibara pours her heart into each piece. Through her sculptures, she hopes to share her unique world with others, allowing her love and imagination to resonate beyond the boundaries of everyday life.

𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡|Hideki IINUMA

Born in Nagano, Japan, and currently based in Tokyo, Hideki Iinuma studied fine arts in both Japan and France. Working primarily in wood, he creates figurative sculptures inspired by fashion, urban life, personal memories, and everyday scenes, exploring the subtle emotional tension revealed through posture, clothing, gesture, and color.

Using chainsaws and hand tools, Iinuma carves directly into wood while preserving the material’s cuts, cracks, rough textures, and natural imbalance. Rather than fully controlling the medium, he embraces the unexpected transformations that emerge throughout the carving and painting process, allowing each work to evolve through collaboration with the material itself.

Iinuma’s practice also investigates the idea of boundaries—where the body begins and ends, and how clothing may become an extension of the body. Through the continual processes of dividing, connecting, and reshaping forms, his sculptures invite viewers to reconsider the relationships between body, object, and space.

𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡|Yosuke TAKASAKI

Born in Osaka, Japan, and currently based in Kyoto, Yosuke Takasaki graduated from the Sculpture Department of Kanazawa College of Art. Rooted in traditional Japanese wood carving, his practice draws inspiration from Buddhist sculpture and Shinto deities while exploring the contemporary concept of eros through a dialogue between historical aesthetics and modern visual culture.

Rather than treating eros as mere sensuality, Takasaki regards it as a universal human longing for beauty that transcends cultures, borders, and gender. Through reinterpreting traditional motifs with elements of contemporary fe**sh aesthetics, his sculptures often depict sensual female figures adorned with high heels, latex masks, or bodysuits, revealing the enduring human pursuit of beauty across time.

Working primarily in wood, Takasaki also creates paired sculptures inspired by guardian figures, exploring the Japanese concept of “ma (間)”—the invisible space between forms. His works invite viewers to reflect on the coexistence of opposing values and the new meanings that emerge through their relationships.

The Boundary Between Forest and Sculpture
Wood remembers time. Through rings, grain, fissures, and weight, it carries the traces of its natural becoming. Bringing together eight contemporary wood sculptors, this exhibition explores the space where forest and sculpture intersect. As wood is carved and transformed, its original vitality remains embedded within the material. The exhibition asks: after sculpture comes into being, does the forest still remain within the work?
We warmly invite you to experience these works and discover the lingering presence of the forest within contemporary sculpture.
