The Light Returns by RDD

As the days grow shorter and the nights arrive a little faster, The Light Returns is a reminder for me to lean into creativity…to make, create, and find light even in the darker seasons.

Made with luminous pearls, various copper beads, Austrian crystals, and green dentalium, each element catches the shifting light in its own way. Warm copper tones echo the colors of a late summer sunset, while the soft green dentalium carries that color forward.

A reminder that even as the season darkens, there is still light to be made.

I’ve been holding onto some of these materials for a while, specifically the larger copper beads.

What is Held by RDD/SCM

Still in awe. More pictures to come of the process. Forever grateful for this piece and for what it meant to do a partial trade with my tattoo artist.

While I come from amazing, beautiful and fierce people, my path as an artist has been one of my own. In a world where it can be easy to repeat what already exists, it was important for me to take the time to learn my own artistic language and create something that was meaningful to me.

This ta’aw (copper shield) is created with dentalium, each piece individually sewn to create the design. The completed piece is backed with smoked deer hide from Montana, and inside I placed ts’iihlanjaaw (devil’s club) and xíl kagan (Labrador tea)—parts that aren’t visible, but are intentionally carried within it. At its center is abalone, with antique 1–2 mm Venetian white hearts outlining the form.

It is held within an antique French gold-gilt frame lined with beaver fur and backed with felt.

I love that there are parts of it you can see and parts you cannot. What it carries inside matters just as much to me as what I chose to make visible.

After five years of creating, stopping, changing, returning, and finally finishing it, it means so much that this ta’aw also became part of my chest piece.

I made the shield with my own hands, and now I carry the shield on my body.

This one is very close to me.
