Before jazz took over the world, it crossed the Atlantic with a regiment of soldiers.

James Reese Europe led the band of the Harlem Hellfighters, who landed in France on New Year’s Day 1918. His musicians brought jazz to a country worn down by war, and then his name faded from the story.

On Saturday, November 21, Jason Moran brings Europe’s music back to life in The Absence of Ruin, with bassist Tarus Mateen, drummer Nasheet Waits, a seven-piece horn section, and visuals by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young (Arrival, Selma).

Make it a weekend: the night before (Friday, Nov 20), Moran joins nine other pianists, including Timo Andres and Aaron Diehl, for The Complete Philip Glass Etudes.

Jazz this fast deserves a front-row seat. 🎶 🎹

This is pianist and composer Jason Moran, a MacArthur Fellow and the Kennedy Center’s Artistic Director for Jazz from 2014 to 2025, playing his composition “Reanimation.” On November 21 at Zellerbach Hall, he presents James Reese Europe and the Absence of Ruin as part of our Illuminations: “Innocence & Experience” series.

The work revisits James Reese Europe, the composer, bandleader, and World War I lieutenant whose Harlem Hellfighters band helped bring jazz to France in 1918. Moran tells that story with his Bandwagon trio, a seven-piece horn section, and visuals by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young.

Jazz history, told by one of the most inventive pianists working today.

Mendelssohn wrote his String Quartet in F minor in the months after losing his beloved sister, F***y, and you can hear it in every note. This Sunday, the Takács Quartet and pianist Jeremy Denk bring that music to Zellerbach Hall. Swipe through to meet the musicians, including the quartet's newest member, cellist Mihai Ma**ca.

Also on the program are César Franck's passionate Piano Quintet and Quijotadas, inspired by Don Quixote's wildest delusions, by Berkeley's own Gabriela Lena Frank, this year's Pulitzer Prize winner in music.

In 2019, Tom Borrow - Pianist got the call with 36 hours’ notice: step in for star pianist Khatia Buniatishvili on a 12-concert orchestral tour. He nailed it, and he’s been in demand ever since. 🎹

Since then, the Murray Perahia protégé has played with the London Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, and many more. He has also appeared at the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
This Sunday he makes his Cal Performances debut in Hertz Hall with an afternoon of Mozart and Liszt. He plays Mozart’s Piano Sonata in A minor, Liszt’s dazzling Don Juan Fantasy (a riff on Mozart’s Don Giovanni), and Liszt’s famously demanding Sonata in B minor.

The music in this clip is Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli, from his 2023 Wigmore Hall recital. It’s not on Sunday’s program, but it gives you a sense of what he can do.

Come early! Before the performance, students from UC Berkeley’s Pianism seminar lead a free introduction to the afternoon’s music, right across the way in Morrison Hall.
