Mid-Century Modern Block Island Rental

Unlike any home you have been in. Indoor/outdoor design. Meadows, ponds and 180 degree ocean views. Our father designed and built this house in 1969.

The original cape and shed were built prior to 1800. He used the natural elevations of the land to create the design. Exterior decks connect the original cape to two other structures to form an "L" shape. The middle pavilion is the guest room and master bedroom. From this middle structure, the decks change direction and make a right angle turn around the original shed and continue to the Upper house. The upper house contains the kitchen, dinning and living rooms. It is from this house that a 180 degree view of the Atlantic can be seen. Like many modern structures, large windows and angles define the interior spaces. The exterior uses light to create shadow play and structure to preserve the view from sight until "arriving" to the appropriate viewing area at the upper house. The erosion of the dunes revealed a lot more of the black sand that used to be the majority of the higher areas of Crescent Beach. In the 70’s we used to run up to it after being in the cold water to lie in the hotter sand. It is formed from an iron deposit offshore and is magnetic. We used to run magnets through it to collect pure black sand in jars. It is so soft and powdery.

Barn Owl in our fields!! No time to get my good camera. Barn Owls tend to spend their time on Islands- not seen on the mainland of New England much. I found a dead one on our path around the field two years ago. I am thrilled to see another alive ❤️ Please don’t use rodenticides!!

Crescent beach between Town Beach and Scotch. The water reformed the shapes of the dunes. You can see huge swaths that are missing and new sand & beach grass sculpture as a result. The tide is still very high. Town Beach parking lot are still flooded.
