Developing Leaders to Perform Under Pressure
Purple Heart U.S. Michael W. Leadership is revealed during times of pressure.
Marine Veteran
Bestselling Author | Global Keynote Speaker
Certified NLP Practitioner
Founder & CEO @AdversityLeadershipInstitute Allison is the creator of Adversity Leadership®, a leadership methodology that helps leaders and organizations perform under pressure, navigate uncertainty, and build resilient cultures in rapidly changing environments. His work is informed by a lifetime of leading through adversity across multiple industries, sectors, and high-consequence environments. Born in Jamaica, Michael experienced firsthand the impact of disaster, displacement, and uncertainty before immigrating to the United States. At 17, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a Sergeant and Platoon Section Leader with 1st Marine Division. During combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq, he was wounded by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED), earned the Purple Heart, and led Marines through some of the most demanding conditions imaginable. Following his military service, Michael faced another battle: navigating PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and the difficult transition from military to civilian life. Rather than allowing adversity to define him, he committed himself to understanding how people think, adapt, recover, and perform under pressure. Over the next two decades, Michael built a diverse leadership career spanning transportation, government, technology, higher education, entrepreneurship, and organizational development. He led large-scale railroad operations for Norfolk Southern, managed multimillion-dollar technology initiatives for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, served as Director of Military and Veterans Affairs at Florida Atlantic University, and helped build an INC 5000-ranked company serving residential, commercial, and government clients. Complementing his practical leadership experience, Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems, an MBA in Applied Management, studied Homeland Security and Emergency Management, completed the University of Florida Veterans Entrepreneurship Program, and pursued advanced study in brain science, trauma, resilience, and human performance. Today, Michael works with executives, organizations, government agencies, universities, and leadership teams seeking to strengthen decision-making, culture, adaptability, and performance in high-pressure environments. His signature frameworks including Adversity Leadership®, Break The Bottle®, Protect The House®, Leadership Re-Entry™, and LECQM 2.0™—provide leaders with practical systems for creating clarity, developing courage, building trust, and sustaining performance when the stakes are high. Michael's central belief is simple:
Leadership is not tested during times of certainty. His mission is to equip leaders with the mindset, systems, and leadership disciplines required to perform when it matters most.

The most expensive costume in a workplace is:
“I have it under control.”
Leaders wear it because they fear uncertainty will cost them credibility. Employees wear it because they fear questions will make them look unqualified.
Soon, everyone is performing certainty while the actual problem continues growing.
Composure does not require pretending. You can lead through uncertainty without creating unnecessary panic.
Start with three honest statements:
“Here is what we know.”
“Here is what we do not know yet.”
“Here is what we are doing next.”
Calm is not pretending everything is fine. Calm is telling the truth without transferring your panic to everyone else.
Take off the costume. Give people something they can trust.

We're just days away from the 2026 AFP-NJ Conference on Philanthropy.
I'm honored to be serving as the Morning Featured Speaker and opening the conference with a conversation that I believe is more important than ever:
🎤 Break the Bottle: Removing Invisible Barriers That Limit Fundraising Performance and Retention
Fundraising is about more than strategies, systems, and donor engagement.
It's also about how leaders respond under pressure, how teams stay aligned during challenges, and how organizations overcome the internal obstacles that often go unnoticed.
My goal is simple:
To provide attendees with practical tools they can immediately apply to improve leadership effectiveness, strengthen team performance, and create sustainable momentum for greater impact.
If you'll be attending, stop by and introduce yourself. I always enjoy meeting nonprofit leaders and fundraising professionals who are committed to making a difference.
See you soon, New Jersey!

Organizations spend a lot of money teaching people about leadership. I think we need to spend just as much time asking whether people are actually becoming better leaders.
I’ve benefited from formal education, leadership programs, mentors, coaching, and years of experience. All of them have contributed to how I lead. But I’ve also learned that understanding leadership and being able to lead are two different things.
The real test comes back at work. Can the manager have the difficult conversation? Can they make a sound decision without perfect information? Can they develop someone instead of always giving them the answer? Can they handle conflict, create accountability, translate strategy for their team, and adjust when the situation changes?
That’s where education has to become capability.
In my latest article, “Are We Developing Leaders or Just Educating Them?”, I share why I believe leadership development has to extend beyond courses and completion rates, and why organizations should pay closer attention to what their investment is actually changing.

You can be the smartest person in the room and still be the reason the room goes quiet.
Education matters. Experience matters. Expertise matters. But none of them automatically make people comfortable bringing you bad news, challenging your assumptions or admitting that they need help.
Here is a better leadership test:
Do people tell you about problems while they are still manageable?
Can they disagree without first calculating the personal cost?
Do they leave your meetings knowing what they own?
Do they contribute more when you enter the room, or less?
When people wait to learn your opinion before sharing theirs, you may not be receiving agreement. You may be receiving edited information.
Leadership is not proven by how much you know. It is revealed by what other people are able to contribute in your presence.

Great catching up with fellow keynote speaker Micah Hill over breakfast this morning in my hometown of South Florida!
One of the things I appreciate about Anthony Trucks | Keynote Speaker and the Speak to Freedom community is the genuine relationships you build with people who are doing meaningful work.
Micah brings something special to the stage. She's not just talking about resilience and leadership from a textbook. She's helped scale and sell a major business, navigated real-world challenges, and now uses those experiences to help leaders build capacity, navigate pressure, and lead through change.
We had a great conversation about the speaking industry, business, and what we're both building.
If you're looking for a keynote speaker who brings real business experience, practical leadership insights, and a powerful message, Micah Hill is someone worth knowing.

Appreciate the connection, Micah! Looking forward to seeing you continue to grow and make an impact.

This matters more.
When someone can explain what they heard, what it challenged and what they plan to do differently, I know the message did more than entertain the room.
I could tell you what I hoped the audience would receive from the keynote. I would rather let someone who experienced it tell you. Thank you Angel Abrego.
As you listen, consider one question:
What would applying this look like in your life or leadership this week?

One of the most useful questions a leader can ask is also one many teams are afraid to answer:
“What are we not saying?”
I have sat in military briefings, government meetings, classrooms and business conversations. The rooms were different, but the pattern was often the same. People knew more than they were willing to say.
Sometimes the problem was not courage. It was what they expected the person in charge to do with the truth.
If you ask for honesty and become defensive when you receive it, you train people to protect you from information you need.
Ask the question. Give people time to answer. Do not interrupt the first uncomfortable response, and do not punish the person who was willing to say what others were thinking.
A quiet room is not always an aligned room. Sometimes it is a room that has learned to edit itself around the leader.
