Miró's luminous lithography 🔴🟡🟢🔵
In the late 1940s, Joan Miró published a poem titled “Poetic Games”—a meditation on creativity and artistic inspiration. In the mid-1960s, he returned to that poem for this fantasy of floating signs, weirdly shaped creatures, and calligraphic lines. Each print required multiple printing stones to achieve the layered compositions of intense color.

This small object from ancient Egypt has a big story.
Scarabs inscribed with lengthy texts commemorating the pharaoh’s deeds were an innovation during the reign of Amenhotep III, who ruled from 1390 to 1352 B.C.E. Our upcoming exhibition “Maverick Kings: Three Visionary Pharaohs of Egypt’s Golden Age” focuses on him and two other rulers of the 18th Dynasty, all of whom understood the power of images and used them to assert their power.
Opening September 6, the landmark exhibition features more than 100 extraordinary objects, drawn primarily from the MFA’s renowned holdings of ancient Egyptian art.

Bold, experimental, extravagant, and unbound, both literally and in the creative minds that produced them, “livres d’artiste” had no precedent. At the turn of the 20th century, they revolutionized the book as an art form and attracted many famous practitioners—Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dalí among them.
Opening today, “Picasso, Miró, Dalí: Unbound” introduces the imaginative world of this form through a group of extraordinary works by Spanish artists 📖
Rarely on view, and resisting easy categorization, these “livres d’artiste” invite visitors into a world of artistic ambition in which creativity and the power of collaboration led to some of the most singular and compelling achievements of publishing in the 20th century.

Among the first of Edward Hopper's paintings to illustrate what became a favorite theme, "Drug Store" depicts nocturnal solitude in the city.
Eerily illuminated by electric light, the drugstore window (probably located near his studio in New York's Greenwich Village) is a bright spot in a picture otherwise made up of shadowy doorways and blank facades.
🎂 Hopper was born in 1882. Find this early masterpiece by the artist on view in our Art of the Americas Wing!

Mondays are ruff 💤
Half awake, eyes slightly open, this pup has curled up on a low shelf for a nap. It nestles against a variety of household objects: an earthenware jug, a bundle of branches, a wicker basket, and a solitary slipper. Look closely at the artist's laborious depiction of the dog and its textures—soft fur, wet nose, and leathery paws.
Is there a more adorable dog in Dutch art?! Find this good boy on view in our galleries of Dutch and Flemish art.

This fall, explore the lives and legacies of three mighty pharaohs.
Opening September 6, “Maverick Kings: Three Visionary Pharaohs of Egypt’s Golden Age” focuses on three celebrated rulers of the 18th Dynasty: Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III, and Akhenaten. All members of the same family, each was a maverick who understood the power of images and used them effectively to advance their agendas during their long reigns.
Drawing primarily from the MFA’s renowned collection of ancient Egyptian art, one of the largest and most important in the world, the exhibition also includes important loans from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and more.
