š„ Flame Color Analysis: What Your Fire Pit Flame Is Telling You
The color of your fire pit flame is more than just appearanceāit can provide valuable clues about how the fire feature is performing.
Flame color is influenced by the relationship between fuel, oxygen, gas pressure, burner design, and fire media. Understanding these factors can help identify when a flame is operating normally and when a change deserves a closer look.
š„ What Does the Color Tell You?
Blue Flame
Generally indicates more air is mixing with the fuel, supporting efficient combustion. However, HPC decorative burners are intentionally engineered for a natural orange-to-yellow campfire appearance, not simply the bluest flame possible.
Yellow/Orange Flame
Often normal and desirable in decorative fire features. The goal is a controlled, stable, visually appealing flame created through proper burner engineeringānot by restricting oxygen.
Lazy Yellow Flame + Soot
May indicate incomplete combustion, restricted airflow, excessive flame impingement, incorrect gas pressure, or burner obstruction.
Sudden Color Change
Could point to changes in gas pressure, air mixture, burner condition, media, fuel configuration, or environmental conditions.

Fire glass, lava rock, ceramic media, and logs can influence flame appearance through heat retention, light reflection, and interaction with combustion. Moisture in porous media can also temporarily change the flame during startup.
