Back in May, the Decatur Police Department began an increased traffic enforcement effort called Operation Slow & Steady. After speeding was mentioned at every town hall, the premise was simple- increase visibility, focus on speeding and unsafe driving, and hopefully reduce the number of accidents on our streets.
Now that we have several months of data, I thought it was worth sharing the results.

Before the operation began, Decatur was averaging around 66 traffic accidents per week. From May 15 through September 20, that average dropped to approximately 36 accidents per week. That’s a reduction of roughly 45%.
The weekly averages were 38.5 for the second half of May, 39 in June, 38.8 in July, 28 in August and 38 through September 20.

During that same period, DPD documented 6,768 traffic violations. Of those, 3,184 were for speeding, which means nearly half of all violations were speeding related. There were also 1,719 other safety-related violations, 767 driver’s license violations, 522 insurance violations, 483 tag or registration violations, 66 DUIs and 27 reckless driving violations.

I know nobody likes seeing blue lights in the rearview mirror, and traffic enforcement isn’t always popular. The goal is slowing people down, changing driving habits and reducing accidents. The data shows DPD has been successful in that.
Going from roughly 66 accidents a week to 36 during a concentrated traffic enforcement effort is pretty impressive.
At the end of the day, fewer accidents mean fewer injuries, less property damage, fewer emergency responses and safer streets. Huge kudos to DPD.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see this continued level of enforcement…

School buses will be back on the road this week. Watch for them and know what to do around them! Here is a refresher:
🚘FOR DRIVERS
Make school bus transportation safer for everyone by following these practices:
⚠️When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
⚠️When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.
⚠️Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
⚠️Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
⚠️Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.

🛑Learn and obey the school bus laws in Alabama, as well as the "flashing signal light system" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:
🚥Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
🚥Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.

Bitterly cold conditions are expected overnight with low temperatures dropping into the 15 to 20 degree range primarily. However, northerly winds of 5 to 10 mph will make it feel like temps drop into the 5 to 10 degree range. So make sure to bundle up.
