Let’s talk about PRIMITIVE REFLEXES!

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements that babies are born with. They help babies respond to their environment, survive, and begin developing important movement skills.
As a baby’s brain and nervous system mature, these reflexes naturally become less active, allowing more purposeful, controlled movements to develop. This process is called reflex integration.

But what happens when certain reflexes remain active beyond the expected developmental period?
Sometimes, persistent primitive reflex activity may be associated with challenges in everyday activities.

So, what can parents look for?
You might notice your child:

* Frequently bumps into things or appears clumsy.
* Has difficulty sitting still or maintaining good posture.
* Struggles with handwriting or other fine motor activities.
* Becomes overwhelmed by everyday sounds or textures.
* Has difficulty coordinating movements.
* Becomes easily frustrated with tasks that seem simple for other children.

Remember: Every child develops at their own pace! These signs do not automatically mean a child has retained primitive reflexes. They are simply things worth paying attention to when looking at the bigger picture of your child’s development.

At The Ark Pediatric Therapy Services, we believe in looking beyond the behavior or the struggle to better understand the skills behind it.
Because sometimes, it’s not that a child won’t do something… it’s that their body and brain are still working on the skills needed to do it!
