Conservation Legacy is a national organization dedicated to fostering conservation service in support of communities and ecosystems.

We operate and support programs that provide service and work opportunities for a diverse group of individuals to complete important conservation and community projects for the public benefit. Founded in 1998 to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s, Conservation Legacy programs include: Southwest Conservation Corps, Great Appalachian Valley Conservation Corps, Southeast Conservation Corps, Arizona Conservation Corps, Preserve America Youth Summit and BRIDGE Network. “Corps work is easily the hardest and most rewarding work I’ve done.”

Over the past five years, Dorothy Hendrix has served with AZCC, CCNM and SCC as a corpsmember, individual placement and crew leader. From maintaining trails in the Grand Canyon to leading subalpine restoration in Colorado and surveying trails in New Mexico, she’s built skills, tackled challenges and grown along the way.

For Dorothy (currently serving as an IP with CCNM), the impact of corps work goes beyond the projects themselves. Each season brings new opportunities for professional development, problem-solving and working with people from different backgrounds. Through it all, she’s become more resilient, confident and skilled, both on and off the job.

“The growth I’ve experienced in these environments is unparalleled with a ‘normal’ job.”

Check out Osprey Packs story on the Traditional Harvest Project, which is strengthening connections to ancestral lands and cultural traditions in Southwest Colorado.

The project brings together the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Montezuma Land Conservancy, and Trees, Water & People to restore access to culturally significant plants and care for the landscapes that sustain them.

We’re proud that Southwest Conservation Corps and Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps are part of this effort, supporting river restoration and creating paid service opportunities for local communities and Indigenous youth and young adults.

We hate to brag, but our Individual Placements are doing some seriously amazing stuff. 👀

Check out this incredible searchable library of soundscape recordings from Alaska’s National Parks, created with help from Stewards Individual Placements Scientists in Parks member, Elliott Ruebush! Elliott helped collect and compile sound and spectrogram recordings from around Alaska, helping bring the sounds of these wild places to life in a whole new way.

And what might you hear? Loons. Wolves. Bears. Oh my! 🐺🦉🐻

Head over and explore the sounds of Alaska’s National Parks for yourself. 🔊🏔️

🐟 Meet Blake Tran, a Conservation Corps New Mexico Individual Placement with the New Mexico Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office!

Blake’s service has included rescuing endangered Rio Grande silvery minnows from drying river sections, monitoring Colorado pikeminnow and razorback sucker populations, helping move fish above natural barriers so they can spawn, collecting fish data through electrofishing, and confirming the presence of Rio Grande chub at two wildlife refuges.

And he’s picked up plenty of new skills along the way, including fish tagging, research and monitoring, and, perhaps most importantly, successfully backing that trailer into a very tight corner in ONE motion. As Blake put it, “I was really proud of that.” 😂

Now, Blake is sticking around for another six months, with some big projects ahead, including tagging roughly 150,000 Rio Grande silvery minnows and continuing native fish monitoring across the region.

He’s also using his education award to take an ichthyology class and brush up on biostatistics, all while building toward a career in native fish conservation.

We’re excited to see where the next six months take you, Blake!

It's and we want to celebrate our participants and partners who are working hard to improve their corners of the country. Thank you for all you do 👏

One effort we want to highlight comes out of Whiskeytown, California. In 2026, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Whiskeytown National Recreation Area with the support of Stewards Individual Placements and the National Park Foundation, hosted three Wildfire Recovery Assistants.

Individual Placements Brynn Messersmith, Stella Mercer, and Sam Paker have played a critical role in Whiskeytown’s habitat recovery following the 2018 Carr Fire, which burned 97% of the National Park Unit. Their work has included invasive species management, native seed collection and restoration, historic landscape and orchard restoration, and fuels reduction.

With service continuing into 2027, the trio has completed 18 invasive species surveys and 118 treatments, mapping 136 populations across more than 60 acres of bulldozer lines, handlines, fire scars, and other areas impacted by wildfires over the past decade.

Thank you, Brynn, Stella, and Sam, for your continued effort and the lasting impact you’re making on habitat recovery at Whiskeytown!
