***If you operate a server, you need to update your PHP version as soon as possible.***

Multiple separate, severe security vulnerabilities were announced today.

>>>Two vulnerabilities in the PHP web scripting language (used in many web servers) were announced today that severely compromise the security of those servers.

Some governments have taken their websites offline as a precaution, and it's possible that other website owners may follow suit while they patch their security.

>>>Another, unrelated, severe vulnerability was announced regarding the Trusted SSL Certificates used for most website security. eMudhra, a Certificate Authority in India, issued botched certificates 18 months ago, that allow breaching and faking of website security worldwide.

***Ordinary users should install available software updates. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari web browsers have already started blocking the eight bad eMudhra certificates . Users of other web browsers should check the news for their particular browsers to make sure they're also blocking the bad certs.***

Pacific Power is planning an outage starting on Thursday, October 15th at 10PM and ending Friday, the 16th, at 5AM. It sounds like the outage will cover most or all of the county.

Pacific Power asks that customers unplug sensitive electronics. This is a good idea. Please try not to rearrange how any network cables are plugged in when you do this, though.

Once Grid Power is Restored:

If you have any issues with your internet connection, please do not press the reset button on any WiFi routers; if you do this, it wipes the router settings, which is not what you want to do.

Please make sure that any network devices are plugged back in to power, and look for any network cables that may have inadvertently been unplugged, and attempt to plug them in how they were before.

Please give network gear 5-10 minutes, once it is powered back on, to start up and reconnect. Most WVN systems will have been continuously backup-powered, so most people should not experience any delay on our end. However, in a few areas, our equipment may need time to power back up and reconnect, so please don't worry if it takes 10 minutes or a bit more.

If you have any issues getting reconnected, that you are not able to resolve with the above steps, please give us a call for help!

There was a planned maintenance last night in La Grande. We were notified that it was not expected to cause significant downtime. However, it has interrupted connection upstream from us, causing an outage.

We are awaiting word on what the problem is. We will update this post when we have more information.

Update 05:50: The techs in La Grande are working to resolve an unexpected problem. It's a fine-grained technical issue, so no ETA was available. They were hoping within the hour.

Given frequent power outages the past few summers, WVN has been installing large capacity batteries in our network all across the County.

We now have multi-day backup power at our distribution sites in the Lake Basin. If power goes out and you have a UPS at your house, your service should stay on.

If you don't have a UPS, reach out to us or Blue Mountain Computer to purchase one and stay online this summer!
