We often think we’re doing our trees a favor by piling on fresh mulch—but a “mulch volcano” can become a slow-motion tree killer.
Piling organic matter directly against the trunk traps moisture exactly where it doesn’t belong, keeping bark damp and inviting decay. That cozy mound can also shelter pests and encourage roots to circle the trunk.
A tree’s root flare—the widening part at the base—should stay visible, not disappear beneath a mountain of wood chips.
Instead of burying your trees, pull the mulch back at least three inches from the trunk and keep the layer only two to three inches deep. Spread it outward, not upward.
Mulch is supposed to protect the roots—not smother the trunk. Give the base breathing room before the damage stays hidden for another season.

🍂 YOUR TREE IS LOSING LEAVES… BUT ITS ROOTS AREN'T DONE YET! 🌳
Think your trees are finished growing for the year? Think again!
Even after the leaves fall, tree roots can remain active until soil temperatures drop. What you do during fall can make a difference when spring arrives.
🍁 3 Fall Tree Care Tips Before Winter:
💧 Check soil moisture. Keep trees properly hydrated during dry fall weather before the ground freezes.
🌱 Protect the roots. Apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch, keeping it away from the trunk.
🌳 Know when to fertilize. If your tree needs additional nutrients, a properly formulated fall fertilizer may help support its seasonal needs.
TreeHelp Fall Fertilizer is specially formulated for fall application, with potassium and temperature-controlled nitrogen release.

🍂 Your tree might need protection from the winter SUN—not just the cold! 🌳
Young trees and thin-barked species can develop winter sunscald when daytime sunshine warms their trunks and freezing nighttime temperatures cause sudden changes.
A little fall preparation can help!
✅ Protect vulnerable trunks with suitable tree wrap.
✅ Keep mulch away from the trunk.
✅ Remove seasonal wrap in spring.
