Connecting with the sphenoid in a Craniosacral Therapy session is a delicate and profound opportunity to shift physical, mental, and spiritual states of being. I begin by gently touching the sphenoid and connecting to the clients anatomy, adjusting my position slightly as needed. I then lighten my pressure significantly, no greater than the weight of a dime. Deepening of breath and increase in eye movement often happen immediately and the client may experience a sense of floating and drifting. I follow the ebb and flow of the cranial wave and support unwinding. A gentle decompression upwards to the ceiling is offered without increasing pressure and, after a few moments, there is a body wide shift. A softening, a widening of areas of tension. A release of holding and gripping, allowing space to exist where there was once compression and clenching. The client finds themselves drifting even deeper into a place of deep comfort allowing an even deeper opportunity for shifts to occur.

Heart decompression is one of my favorite Craniosacral holds. While supporting the neck and head, I connect to breath and heartbeat while gently placing my hand on the sternum. Coregulation occurs as our breathing patterns, heart rates, and brainwaves find coherence. I then apply subtle decompression of the sternum towards the feet, and wait. Breath deepens, release occurs through muscle twitching, unwinding, emotional release, and deep sighs. The client will often find themselves floating into a trance like state, feeling safe, supported, and held.
