Signed on September 30, 1809, the Treaty of Fort Wayne transferred nearly 3 million acres of Native land in present-day Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio to the United States. Although some tribal leaders supported the agreement, others, including Shawnee leader Tecumseh, opposed it as a threat to Native sovereignty. The treaty heightened tensions across the region and contributed to Tecumseh's War and the outbreak of the War of 1812.

Visit Promised Lands: California's Unratified Treaties and Native Resilience when it opens October 3rd.

Painting of Tecumseh based on an 1808 sketch. Platinum Print with watercolor by Owen Staples (1866-1949) made in 1915 based on Benson John Lossing 1868 engraving. Toronto Public Library.
