“Alternative investments” might sound like a complicated finance term, but the concept is pretty simple.

It generally refers to investments outside traditional stocks and bonds—such as real estate, private companies, and precious metals. And here’s where it gets interesting: certain retirement accounts can hold alternative assets, too.

he key is understanding the account structure and the rules that come with it.

Frequently Asked Fridays: Why are they called alternative assets?

They are called “alternative” because they fall outside traditional asset classes such as publicly traded stocks, bonds, and cash. Examples include real estate, private lending, and private equity.

Unlike many stocks and bonds, these investments are often accessed through private transactions rather than major public exchanges.

Alternative assets can behave differently from traditional investments, but they may also be less liquid and require more specialized knowledge to evaluate.

What actually happens if someone breaks IRA rules?

Depending on the violation, the consequences can go beyond simply correcting a mistake. Certain prohibited transactions, for example, can cause an IRA to lose its tax-advantaged status and result in tax consequences.

That’s why understanding the rules becomes especially important when an IRA holds alternative assets.

Frequently Asked Fridays: What am I not allowed to put into my self-directed IRA? 🤔

SDIRAs allow many alternative investments, but not every asset is permitted. IRAs generally cannot hold life insurance contracts, most collectibles, or S-corporation stock.

Collectibles can include artwork, rugs, antiques, stamps, alcoholic beverages, and most coins. Certain coins and bullion may qualify when IRS requirements are met.

You also cannot use IRA funds to buy an asset for personal use, such as a primary residence or vacation home you plan to enjoy yourself.

When in doubt, review the rules before directing a purchase.

Some real estate assets are built around access to space rather than traditional occupancy. Storage units, parking garages, mobile home parks, and airplane hangars are examples.

One rollover rule that’s easy to overlook: the 60-day deadline.

With certain rollovers, you generally have 60 days to deposit the funds into another eligible retirement account. Miss the deadline, and the amount may be treated as a distribution—with potential tax consequences.

A good reminder that when it comes to retirement accounts, how you move your money matters.

In self-directed investing, understanding the language is part of understanding the process.

A SIMPLE IRA is a retirement plan commonly used by smaller employers that allows eligible employees to make salary-reduction contributions and requires employer contributions.
