🌌✨ THE MILKY WAY STRETCHES ACROSS THE AUTUMN SKY

The Milky Way remains an attractive observing target in early October, with rich star fields and dark dust lanes visible from dark locations on October 2. 🔭

⚠️ THE DARK-SKY CATCH
This is a target for dark skies. City lights wash out the Milky Way almost completely, and bright moonlight does the same. The waning Moon rises late in the evening, so the early evening hours after dusk are the best window.

🌌 A VIEW FROM INSIDE OUR GALAXY
The Milky Way is our home galaxy, a disk of hundreds of billions of stars roughly 100,000 light-years across. We see it as a band because we're looking edge-on through the disk from inside. ✨

The brighter central region, toward the galactic core about 26,000 light-years away, is lower in the southwest as autumn progresses. The fainter band continues overhead through Cygnus and Cassiopeia.

The dark streaks are not gaps. They're vast clouds of interstellar dust blocking the starlight behind them. 🌠

🔭 HOW TO WATCH

→ Look in the early evening on October 2, once the sky is fully dark after dusk
→ Face the southwest for the brighter core, then follow the band overhead toward the northeast
→ Naked eye or camera; no telescope needed
→ Allow 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adapt
→ Avoid phone screens and bright lights, which ruin dark adaptation

📸 Use a tripod, a wide lens and a long exposure to capture the star fields and dust lanes.
