The 55-acre cemetery boasts the only tree-canopied street in the city. A mausoleum was constructed in 1918, with additions in 1920 and 1964. In 1889, Stephen Olney purchased from the United States government, land which had been a part of the Umatilla Indian Reservation on the southwest border of Pendleton. When the Pioneer Cemetery became unfit for further use as a cemetery, the City Council purchased of Stephen Olney 155 & 56/100 acres of his land and named it Olney Cemetery. At the time of the purchase of the land, the City Council set aside a lot to be used for the burial of Stephen Olney when it should be needed. Olney died some years later in Sprague, Washington, and is buried there. The first person to be buried in the Olney Cemetery was James H. Turner, a former lawyer, teacher and editor of the East Oregonian, on June 13, 1891. Figg suddenly dropped dead and he was buried the next day-the second funeral in the new cemetery. Figg left a fund for the purchase of lots int he Cemetery for the use of the Masonic Order of Pendleton.
