Wittenberg Math & Computer Science

Come out to the Math & Computer Science tailgate Saturday from 10 am-2 pm! Our spot is off East Campus drive in the big tent to the left of Synod Hall. We will have food and drinks (including Dr. Parker's award-winning chili) and we would love to see you!

Congrats to our 2026 Math, Computer Science, Data Science, and Information Systems graduates! We are so proud of you and can't wait to see what you do next!

Congrats to our 2025 departmental graduates! We are so proud of you and your accomplishments!

Local alumni: the Math and Computer Science department is honoring Dr. Bill Higgins' retirement from Wittenberg after 41 years of teaching mathematics in our department (along with many other accomplishments). The reception will be held this Friday 5/2, starting at 4:00 pm in the Science Center atrium, and we would like to invite you to stop by to share your well wishes with Bill. There will be food and drinks provided as well.

We hope you can join us!

Congrats to two of our math majors for being selected as Noyce Scholars!

McKenna Clark ‘26, Savannah LaMar ‘26, and Charity Perry ’25 recently earned scholarships through the $1.2 million continuing grant from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program specifically designed to address the large shortage of high school STEM educators across the nation. Happy homecoming week!

The department will be tailgating at the Tiger Tailgate on Saturday starting at 10 am. We will have food, drinks, pi(e), and freebies – please come find us on East Campus Drive and say hi!

Also, Dr. Higgins will be retiring at the end of this year and Beth Hallauer (our admin from 2013-2021) will be leaving Wittenberg after this week. Please stop by to see both of them!

As you may have heard or read, Wittenberg is currently considering making cuts to faculty and staff positions to go into effect either this year (for staff) or next year (for faculty). These cuts will amount to the loss of roughly 50-60% of faculty, and the resulting loss of these faculty members means about half of the curriculum at Wittenberg will move online (taught by non-Wittenberg faculty). Currently, all departments are heavily affected with the proposed cuts, including ours.

We are asking our alumni and current students to share your experiences with us - how was your education and time at Wittenberg shaped by in-person courses and by the people (faculty and staff)? What are your opinions about moving coursework online and would you have chosen to attend Wittenberg if 50% of the coursework was online? How have aspects of in-person education and connections with faculty and staff helped you in your career?

In our departmental response, we want to capture the impact these cuts will be to the student experience while at Wittenberg, along with students' ability to be successful in their careers after graduation. If you have anything you would like to share, please email me, Dr. Hoofnagle, at [email protected] by Wednesday evening (if possible). Our response is due by Monday at the latest and I would love to include any alumni and student responses I can.

Thanks.

Congrats to our department graduates! We are so proud of you!!

CS Alumni -

Would you be interested in helping our seniors prep for interviews or polish their resumes? If so, please keep reading!

1. In the morning on Tuesday 4/16 OR Tuesday 4/23, I'd like to have an online panel, Interviewing Q & A, with 3-4 alumni from different areas (e.g., software development, cybersecurity). Alumni would first share their interviewing experiences and then answer students' questions about interviewing with a focus on technical interviews. My plan is to collect some questions from students ahead of time, but also allow students to ask questions during the online panel.

If you are interested in being on this panel and are free to Zoom on either or both of these mornings, please get in touch with me (contact information below) by Wednesday 4/10.

2. Students in Senior Seminar are submitting their updated resumes next week. If you a) are a particularly skilled resume writer and/or have experience hiring and evaluating resumes and b) would be interested in giving feedback to a student on their resume, please get in touch we me (contact information below) by Wednesday 4/10.

If you are interested in helping out with either the Interviewing Q & A panel or giving feedback on a resume, please send an email to me (Theresa): [email protected].

Thank you,
Dr. Theresa Wilson
Professor of Practice in Computer Science
