Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’ve shared facts about lymphedema, from risk factors and early detection to SOZO® testing and treatment options.

The SPO team is wearing pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🩷

We stand with those affected by breast cancer and are proud to support the importance of awareness, early detection, and continued care.

October 27 is World Occupational Therapy Day, and we’re highlighting one of the specialized occupational therapy services we offer: lymphedema therapy.

Lymphedema therapy plays an important role in an orthopedic clinic because swelling can be a part of recovery after an injury, surgery, or other orthopedic condition. When swelling persists, it can affect mobility, comfort, strength, and a person’s ability to return to the activities they enjoy.

Our occupational therapist, Brittany, is trained to help patients manage lymphedema and reduce the impact it can have on daily life. Through individualized treatment, patients can learn strategies to manage swelling, improve function, and support their recovery.

Occupational therapy is about more than helping patients recover from an injury. It’s about helping them get back to the things they need and want to do every day.

It’s Lymphedema Fact Friday!

Did you know that your body has hundreds of lymph nodes? These small structures are found throughout your body and play an important role in your immune system and lymphatic system.

When lymph nodes or lymphatic vessels are damaged or blocked, the normal flow of lymph fluid can be disrupted. This can lead to a buildup of fluid in the tissues and cause lymphedema.

Breast cancer survivors face a lifelong risk of developing lymphedema. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to bring more attention to this often-overlooked condition.

Too often, patients don't learn about lymphedema until they begin experiencing symptoms. However, early education and detection can make a meaningful difference.

Many people don't realize that tools are available to help detect lymphedema in Stage 0, before visible symptoms develop. When identified and addressed early, lymphedema may be reversible.
