BIG NEWS! MBF Bioscience is excited to announce a leadership transition. Effective October 1, 2026, Veronica Pessino, PhD, was appointed CEO of MBF Bioscience. Founder Jack Glaser will continue to serve the company through efforts from the Board.
Veronica joined MBF in 2025 and has served as President since January 2026. She brings a background in neuroscience research and experience leading scientific technology businesses. She will lead MBF's next chapter, with a continued focus on serving researchers through our imaging and analysis software and hardware.
Jack co-founded MBF in 1988 and under his leadership, tools like Neurolucida and Stereo Investigator became standards in quantitative neuroscience.
Thank you, Jack, and congratulations, Veronica.

A new study published in JMIR Medical Education found no significant difference in learning outcomes between students attending anatomy courses online versus face-to-face when using a 3D virtual slide system.
Researchers Katharina Sternecker, Christoph Schmitz, and Markus Berndt at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) conducted a cross-over study with 415 medical students, comparing microscopic anatomy instruction delivered in person versus synchronously online.
Students used Histologi@, a virtual 3D slide box powered by the Biolucida Viewer, to study fully scanned histological glass slides previously used in a traditional course - whether they were in the lab or logging in remotely.
The result: learning outcomes were comparable across both formats. Students could zoom, change focus planes, and study histological detail in 3D, no matter where they were.
For institutions balancing growing student populations, distributed campuses, and demand for flexible learning, this research suggests that well-designed virtual microscopy can expand access without compromising educational quality.
Great to see this type of work being published in a top-ranked education journal.

As research questions get bigger and more complex, so do the experiments built to answer them. Imaging workflows increasingly span multiple instruments, real-time analysis, and decisions.
We're very excited to be developing an MHS driver for ScanImage as part of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) research preview: a new standard for AI agents to safely operate physical equipment in scientific research and advanced manufacturing.
During the preview, we're testing how AI agents could support real-time data analysis and more connected imaging workflows, from acquisition through to the rest of the experiment, focusing on safety.
This MHS driver is being tested as part of the research preview, it is not a shipped feature. But we're glad to be testing what these new technologies could mean for microscopy.

Can the rapid antidepressant-like effects of psychedelics be separated from the side effects?
New research published in Molecular Psychiatry suggests they might. Using the FP3002 Fiber Photometry System, Yale University researchers tracked serotonin and norepinephrine activity in real time in the prefrontal cortex of mice. They found that M**A (but not psilocybin) triggered a robust release of norepinephrine alongside serotonin. That norepinephrine appeared to suppress the classic psychedelic behavioral signature while preserving psilocybin's antidepressant-like effects.
This study highlights how real-time neurochemical recording with the FP3002 Fiber Photometry System is helping researchers uncover the complex interactions between neuromodulators, advancing our understanding of brain function and supporting the development of more targeted neuropsychiatric therapies.

α2-Adrenergic receptor modulates 5-HT2A-mediated behavioral effects of M**A and psilocybin in mice - Molecular Psychiatry Classic serotonergic psychedelics such as psilocybin act as agonists at cortical serotonin (5-HT) 2A receptors (5-HT2AR), inducing psychedelic effects in humans and head-twitch responses (HTRs) in rodents. Another class of psychedelic drugs called entactogens, exemplified by M**A, function primarily...

A new study published in Nature Methods by researchers at the Max Planck Institut für Neurobiologie des Verhaltens - caesar demonstrates simultaneous two- and three-photon multiplane imaging across cortical layers in freely moving mice, capturing activity from more than 1,800 neurons across five imaging planes in a single session.
The microscope's innovative design required precise, high-speed multiplexing across five imaging planes. Using ScanImage and high speed vDAQ the team recorded neuronal activity spanning superficial and deep cortical layers during complex decision-making behaviors, opening new possibilities for studying brain function in natural behaviors.
Congratulations to the authors on this exciting advance in neuroscience imaging.
