Happy Halloween from your friends at Osborne Animal Clinic!

๐ SHARE this Halloween Safety Reminder: Keep the Treats Away from Your Pets! ๐พ
Halloween is all about candy, costumes, and fun for the family. But some of those Halloween treats and decorations can be dangerous for our four-legged family members.
๐ซ Chocolate Can Be Toxic to Dogs and Cats
Not all chocolate is the same. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder are especially dangerous, but milk chocolate can also cause problems. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which pets cannot process like people can. Depending on the type and amount eaten, chocolate poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, and even death.
๐ฌ Other Candy Dangers
Sugar-free candy and gum may contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.
Raisins and grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Candy wrappers can cause choking or intestinal blockages.
Large amounts of sugary treats can cause stomach upset.
๐ถ A Few More Halloween Safety Tips
Keep candy bowls out of reach. Donโt leave trick-or-treat bags or candy on tables where pets can get into them.
Watch the front door. Excited pets can slip outside when the door opens repeatedly. Keep them in a secure room or behind a pet gate.
Keep pets away from glow sticks and decorations. Chewing on decorations, electrical cords, or small Halloween accessories can cause injuries or other problems.
Be careful with costumes. Make sure costumes fit properly and donโt restrict breathing, movement, or vision. Never leave a costumed pet unattended.
Use caution with candles and pumpkins. Keep lit decorations away from curious noses and wagging tails.
Make sure identification is current. Pets can get frightened by unfamiliar noises and visitors. Updated ID tags and microchip information can help bring them home.
๐จ What if your pet eats something they shouldnโt?
Donโt wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital right away. Have the type of candy or product, estimated amount, and time of ingestion available. Never try to induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinary professional.
A little prevention can save a trip to the emergency clinic and, in some cases, save a life.
From all of us at Osborne Animal Clinic, have a safe and happy Halloween!

๐ Halloween tips for dogs and cats, from the ASPCA:
๐ซ Chocolate in all forms, especially dark or baking chocolate, can be very dangerous for cats and dogs.
๐ฏ๏ธ A carved jack-o-lantern is festive, but pets can easily knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire.
๐ช All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate, comfortable room away from the front door.
๐ท๏ธ Make sure your pet has proper identification attached.

๐ถ๐ฑ New puppy or kitten at home?
The first few months genuinely set the stage for a lifetime of good health โ vaccination series, parasite care, and getting them comfortable with vet visits early makes everything easier down the road, including future visits that would otherwise be stressful.
